After 10 Months of Starvation, Barilla the Dog is Rescued and Completely Transformed

Barilla, a severely malnourished dog, is one such inspiring example. Thanks to the dedication of animal rescuers, she got a second chance at life—and love.

Eduardo Rodriguez, the man behind a rescue center in Granada, Spain, has spent his life saving animals in need. But even he was shaken by the sight of Barilla.

“I’ve rescued dogs since I was a child and thought I’d seen it all,” Eduardo shared. “But I had never seen a dog in such an awful state.”

When Barilla arrived at the shelter, her condition was dire. Her bones jutted out from under her skin, her organs were close to failure, and she was too weak to stand—only able to move her head and tail.

“She had gone without food and water for so long,” Eduardo told the Daily Mail. “When she came in, she was barely alive.”

Despite the odds, Eduardo refused to give up on her.

Barilla weighed just 7.5 kg (around 16.5 lbs) when she was rescued. Her recovery journey would be long and difficult—but with patience, love, and proper care, she slowly began to regain her strength.

“Her malnutrition was so severe she could hardly move on her own,” Eduardo recalled. “We helped her heal, step by step.”

With round-the-clock care from the shelter team, Barilla made an astonishing recovery. Not only did she regain her health—she rediscovered her joy.

Veterinarians admitted that most dogs in her condition wouldn’t have survived. But Barilla did more than survive—she thrived.

From the moment Eduardo met her, he felt a deep bond. “I told my colleagues that one day I’d take her home and hold her close. Now I finally can.”

Barilla now lives happily with Eduardo, his wife, their daughters, and their five other dogs. She’s surrounded by love and has found her forever family.
